How I Got My Toddler Potty Trained (Mostly) Without Losing My Mind

I still remember the day my daughter came running to me yelling, “Pee pee coming!” — in the middle of Target. We weren’t even officially potty training yet. I just nodded like, “Okay. Game on.”
Honestly, I was overwhelmed at first. Pull-ups or no pull-ups? Potty seat or full chair? Training in one weekend or taking it slow?
So here’s how I did it — real talk, no fluff.
Step 1: We Picked a “Real” Potty
I wanted something that felt exciting but not confusing. We got the Summer Infant My Size Potty — it looks like a mini toilet, with a handle that actually flushes (makes the sound, not real water 😂).

Why it worked for us: My daughter felt like a big girl. She would even pretend to flush when her teddy bear used it. It became a game, not a chore.

Step 2: Potty Time Became Story Time
We added Daniel Tiger’s Potty Time book to our daily routine. She loved pushing the buttons, and the “If you have to go potty, STOP…” song got stuck in both our heads.

Why I recommend it: It took the pressure off. It wasn’t just “go pee now!” it was a cuddle moment with a story and learning. That book did more than I ever could.
Step 3: The Sticker Chart = Gold
Every time she went even if it was just sitting down we put a star on her potty chart. She got to pick the sticker and put it on herself. No candy, no bribes just pride.

We used the Cozy Greens Potty Training Chart and she loved it. I hung it on the bathroom door. She’d run to it like she just scored a goal.

Step 4: Accidents Happened. A Lot.
We had “pee on the floor” moments. A very memorable “poop in the hallway” moment. And so many close calls.
I kept flushable wipes and training pants with us everywhere. My tip? Keep a portable foldable seat in your car (we had the OXO 2-in-1 Go Potty), because public bathrooms are chaos with a toddler.

Bonus: Step Stool for Hand Washing
She wanted to wash her hands “by myself.” So we got a non-slip step stool, and it became part of the routine. Pee, flush, and wash all like a grown-up.
Final Words, Mama to Mama
Potty training didn’t happen overnight. We had regressions, tears (hers and mine), and some hilarious fails. But with a mix of play, patience, and the right tools, we made it.
Don’t stress about doing it perfectly. Just start. Let them lead when they’re ready. Cheer every little try. And maybe keep an extra pair of leggings in your purse — just in case.
You’ve got this, mama. I’m cheering for you 💕
